Thank you Vladimir,

WOW it's been ages since I left that message. Incidentally I did save some error messages (as it so
happens it's still in a file in a dump of something else). See further below.

I can neither get it on floppy or HD, and none of 3 installers I installed FRESH from did it either.

 > grub-mkrescue needs xorriso. You can't use it without.
 >> I want grub2 on floopy. where are debian's instructions or FAQ for it
 >> please?

^^^ I answer that below a few different ways.

(i said in another message: all installers did poorly except debootstrap which was excellent and
flawless, except for grub2 mixup, see further below)

I have: a 586, K6, and K7 pc and no cdroms. only one has usb working (I don't use it, yet).

After trying 100 commands (approx.) and seeing internet complaints with no answers and seeing the
documentation was wrong or incomplete: I fell back to grub 0.95

(until grub2 "just does it" sometime in the future on some computer system I don't now have)

yes, remembering the grub 0.95 days when grub-mkrescue was easier and I thank those that saw to
that. "grub-mkrescue" 1st thing I tried.

BAD
online instructions for GRUB 2 floppy don't work

          grub-mkrescue --overlay=/boot/grub --image-type=floppy grub_two.dsk
output file must be given
Usage: grub-mkrescue [OPTION] SOURCE...
          grub-mkrescue --overlay=/boot/grub --image-type=floppy -o grub_two.dsk

--xorriso=FILE use FILE as xorriso [optional]
                 OPTIONAL ? WTF ??

# grub-install --root-directory=/floppy fd0

         2) 2560080 unicode.pf2 (itself too big for floppy)
         2) microsoft multi-boot support: not really for linux users

there are too many modules to fit on floopy
and it's anybody's guess what got on and
what is needed for dependancies that isn't

solicitations in new Debian manual:

An unbootable system may be rescued with Super Grub2 Disk or grml.

(no thanks i'll use a boot disk, if I ever get around to finding a command anymore that makes one ??)

While you mention my initial report was "blah" I don't see what is special about a report about
grub2 or installer not working if it was shy of details. What I see is a continual stream of new
user reports on debian and on internet unable to experience linux, possibly, due to ??? Poor
strategy at all levels (myself included). But it was a 2nd or 3rd report - I think i'd been
confused reporting it.

Next time I'll more briefly use report bug. Please excuse wordiness. I just want to be clear I've
used Linux since '92 off 5.25" , and never had such problems booting, never seen so many complainsts
that weren't reliably answered and reported resolved,....

Thank you VERY much Vladimir I do appreciate your time greatly,

	John Hendrickson

Yyea.... grub 0.95 works I don't see installing xorisso and hoping everything starts working. Maybe
it would but the time taken. And I don't see xorisso in all of the above errors, just some.

I don't have a working CDROM why would you think I installed xorisso CD "intel el torito CD writer
support software to make CDROM compatible loopback images? It wasn't required by grub 0.95, and I'm
sure dd(1) would work for any device I have. Who made it newly depend ? ? (i've compiled grub
1.9x, had it loading modules off floppy and boot but w/o auto module loading: I never had xorisso
during doing that, isn't a depends in 1.9x I just looked, stopped 1.9x because i found 0.95 was
working and had failed due to a wholey different thing, like "EZ DRIVE" or something)

Anyhow, neither netinst or debian-cd installed grub2 (loop mounted, of course). debootstraps didn't
install grub2 (or rather, the directions didn't work) xorisso to debinst/. And if your saying
"well, break the rules and force install it" than I must be dreaming: as that isn't an answer to a
major package missing when docs to not say it is.

Grml is sponsored by several companies. For more information about our sponors c
heck out the Sponsors webpage. Grml is a bootable live system (Live-CD) based o
n Debian. Grml includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for system
administrators. Users don't have to install anything on fixed storage.

Super GRUB2 Disk does not write to the disk at all, and so cannot rewrite the MB
R. there are some features of Super GRUB Disk based on GRUB legacy that will ne
ver be included in Super GRUB2 Disk
