I'm using
    GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU="y"
with 2.02~beta2-7, and it works.

I haven't tried with "true"; maybe there's an inconsistency with the
other options?

The info file says:
    If this option is set to 'y',    
so it seems to work as documented.
