This version number doesn't make sense as a version of grub-pc-bin.

They're in /boot/grub/i386-pc/ now.

That probably indicates that your system is misconfigured and isn't
installing the GRUB core image to the right place.  Please post the
output of "debconf-show grub-pc" and "ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/".
