What about actual UEFI firmware? I think in general that won't speak
ext* or anything other than FAT.
The EFI spec mandates a minimal set of filesystems which must be
supported for the ESP (which is what is mounted on /boot/EFI). AIUI
only FAT (and only a specific variant of FAT) is in that set.
