What exactly were the error messages? The precise details are often
significant in some way.

Could you attach your installer logs? They should be in
/var/log/installer/ (we definitely need /var/log/installer/syslog, and
/var/log/installer/partman wouldn't hurt).

I assume you meant update-grub rather than grub-update here.
