How many disks do you have on your system, please?
*If* you have more than one, there's a potential for grub-install to
have not been run to install grub to all the MBRs, and then the BIOS
finds an old copy of the GRUB first-stage loader but tries to use
newer modules. this mis-match can cause all kinds of problems. :-/
