Thank you for your bug report,
I think this is a regression from dropping the
/etc/default/grub.d/init-select.cfg file, we now need
to create an empty directory I suppose.
Cleaning it up would certainly be the wrong choice, after all the reason
it sticks around for you is your local configuration snippets you dropped in
there.
