Yeah, the patch seems fine (I have played around with it a bit and
tried different SO_VERSIONS). I have some issues with the comments about
increasing the version though. I would propose the following statements:

dnl libtool versioning
# +1 : 0 : +1  == adds new functions to the interface
# +1 : 0 : 0   == changes or removes functions (changes include both
#                 changes to the signature and the semantic)
#  ? :+1 : ?   == just internal changes

(I have merged the third line into the second since I believe this to
be more correct, changed the actual texts and reset the REVISION to 0
if CURRENT is incremented which makes more sense and is in line with
the libtool documentation)
