I'm surprised you never heard of the OpenSSL licensing issues with the GPL.

Basically, unless the author of the GPL-ed software grants a special
exception, you can't link it against OpenSSL. Most of libimobiledevice
libraries are under LGPL but the tools usually are under GPL (without
exception). And I guess that a lot of stuff linking against libimobiledevices
libraries are under GPL as well, so they would need an explicit exception as
well.
