Hi Carsten,

Thanks for reporting this issue.

I agree this is a bug, but disagree about tightening the recommendation 
to a dependency.

Instead, I have now file another bug upstream about improving the user 
experience when hit by the bug (i.e. when explicitly suppressing the 
recommendation and using bibtex option anyway): 
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/issues/965

Lowering severity of this bug accordingly.

@Norbert: Arguably better if you'd filed that other bug separately (and 
added an "affects" hint tying it to this one).  That would not, however, 
have helped the frustrating delay in waking me up - sorry for the way 
too long response time! :-/
