There's an upstream effort underway to port it to (gi-)gtk(3) instead of getting rid of gtk completely, of which I am the upstream person working on this after feeling responsible for the Debian packages. I'm fine with the current gtk2 frontend being removed if I don't have the port in good quality sometime before the next release, will then have it uploaded later through NEW.
