The build failure is 100% reproducible for me using pbuilder.

No, as I mentioned, I simply tried building it with pbuilder.

Everything was up-to-date sid versions: gcj-3.3 and fastjar version
3.3.3-0pre4, kaffe version 1.1.3-0.3.

Running JAR=/usr/bin/fastjar pbuilder build ... didn't help anything.
I did find out that the jar alternative in the chroot was set to
kaffe's version; maybe it's different on your machine?
