If Debian decides to move the preferences to another location than the
default, the VM still has to be informed about the new location.
Otherwise it will obviously not find them.
That *could* be done by passing command line parameters to the VM.
However, in SUN's Java 1.4.1 there are 27 different binaries. In Java
1.5 there are a lot more. Should the Debian package automatically
generate script wrappers for all of those?
I'm not saying this is not doable, but I do think this would be quite
complicated and error-prone. Having symlinks would resolve this
without having to open up the wrapper-script can of worms.

As mentioned previous in the bug, the location is configurable through
system properties.
