Sure. I don't think there's necessarily any need for java-package to
disappear entirely: I was envisaging a situation where perhaps it
depended on alien and gave it extra functionality, perhaps by moving
some of the current code into alien patches. The alien maintainer might
be willing to expand on its patch mechanism if necessary I guess. It
seems to me this would bring benefits to java-package in terms of
reducing the common package translation logic.

Anyway, I guess it's probably a good idea to leave this open for the
moment as a placeholder. If I have any more thoughts, I'll add them.
