Ant invocation in debian/rules per pkg-java guidelines

~    The guidelines[0] for co-maintaining Java packages suggest the
following when Ant is a part of a project's build process:

'If you are using Ant you can put ant.properties in the debian
directory, call Ant with "-propertyfile path/to/debian/ant.properties"
and define build.compiler, compile.debug and compile.optimize there.'

~    However, in browsing several of the other projects in the pkg-java
repository, I haven't seen many people using this approach.  A number of
them seem to be setting variables directly in debian/rules.  Is the
ant.properties recommendation still a current preferred convention, or
has that been surpassed by an alternative approach?
