Juho,
Thank you for using Debian software. Although the assertion that
the tomcat4 package dependencies are broken is a pretty sweeping claim,
I have seen this sort of question enough to intuit that someone is
probably talking about the fact that a simple 'apt-get install tomcat4'
doesn't necessarily pull in everything they may need for the
configuration they desire to have. Unfortunately, the dependencies in
tomcat4 are such that expressing them in a package control file is a bit
problematic.
Installing an application server with a simple apt-get install is
not an approach I would recommend. Looking at what packages it suggests
and recommends is also a good idea. If you wish to run tomcat4, I would
also recommend installing tomcat4-webapps and tomcat4-admin. However,
if you are installing this to run as a production server, the minimal
tomcat4 and some additional configuration would be necessary.
Also, be sure your JDK is appropriately set in /etc/default/tomcat4;
this is often overlooked by those getting started with the tomcat4
package. A number of issues can arise related to this issue; search the
last 6 months of the mailing list archives for serveral threads.
