Package: tomcat4
Version: 4.1.31-3
Severity: important

I installed tomcat4 and a number of other suggested and recommeded
packages but it fails to start with the following messages:

Using CATALINA_BASE: /var/lib/tomcat4
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/share/tomcat4
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /var/lib/tomcat4/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/lib/kaffe

Using Security Manager
Internal error: caught an unexpected exception.
Please check your CLASSPATH and your installation.
java/lang/ExceptionInInitializerError
        at
	java.lang.ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader(ClassLoader.java:772)

I then installed Sun's java 1.4 and set the java home in the
/etc/default/tomcat4 file to point to /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_09

And received the following error:

Using CATALINA_BASE: /var/lib/tomcat4
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/share/tomcat4
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /var/lib/tomcat4/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_09
Using Security Manager
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

I then attempted to compile a small java program with 1.4 and got the
same message from the compiler. For some reason the Sun java package
isn't working. I used the rpm file and alien to generate a deb package
which I installed. However, the real problem is that a "default"
install of tomcat and some recommended and suggested packages don't
result in a successful tomcat installation.

Hi,

the recent kaffe uploads have fixed the tomcat4 security manager issue
and I will hereby close two of the three bug reports for this issue.

The third bugreport will stay open tagged as sarge. I think that
it will help people on sarge systems, which are running into this problem
to solve it (and don't further reporting the issue).

Regards,
Wolfgang
