Bug#395167: tomcat5.5: error instantiating 'org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager'

I'm unable to get tomcat5.5 working using java-gcj-compat as the JVM.
There is an error in catalina logs as follows:

This is with the default installation of tomcat5.5 from a clean install,
haven't customized /etc/default/tomcat5.5 or any other config files.
