Amos,
Thanks for your use of java-package and Debian at large.
The update-java-alternatives utility script was developed in May of
this year, largely to ensure that Sun's Java license was less likely
to be violated by someone inadvertently using any Sun Java binary like
java, javac, etc. with a binary from any other non-Sun Java binary like
Kaffe's java, javac, etc. It has, however, proven to be quite handy.
This is a request to have the packaging infrastructure within
java-package rewritten to conform to a new convention that is emerging
as of a few months ago. It is therefore a wishlist item; packages
generated by java-package still function just fine as they always have
without altering the location to which they install their files. There
has already been some discussion about altering java-package to do this
very thing. This wishlist bug will be a great place to solicit dialog
on whether or not we have concensus on this approach.
Regards,
