a workaround should be to copy:
  /usr/share/freeplane/props.xargs ->
  /usr/share/freeplane/fwdir/fwprops.xargs
and
  /usr/share/freeplane/init.xargs ->
  /usr/share/freeplane/fwdir/fwinit.xargs

Is there anything special in your freeplane config?
Which working directory?

I am wondering whether we shall ask knopflerfish upstream.
