Downgrading to the following packages seems to have helped:

libmaven-parent-java_27-2_all.deb
libmaven-resolver-java_1.1.0-3_all.deb
libmaven-shared-utils-java_3.1.0-2_all.deb
libmaven3-core-java_3.5.2-2_all.deb
maven_3.5.2-2_all.deb

(I’ve not upgraded plexus-compiler again since, so it’s also
downgraded still.)
