There is ongoing discussion on gradle bug https://bugs.debian.org/909905 .

Maybe packaging a new jgit (if possible) may make it easier.

You could join https://lists.debian.org/debian-java/ and also talk to
people there.

IIRC, there's also #debian-java on oftc.net as well.
