I’ve just got the same error, here it is in less linewrap-damaged:

[ERROR] Failed to execute goal org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-surefire-plugin:2.22.0:test (default-test) on project […]
[ERROR] The forked VM terminated without properly saying goodbye. VM crash or System.exit called?

The log has:

Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.maven.surefire.booter.ForkedBooter

I’ve tracked it down, and it has nothing to do with libsurefire-java
(which, in fact, wasn’t even installed on one of the systems this
occurs on), but was caused by the last OpenJDK update.
