I would appreciate to first verify that renaming nodejs is in fact
sensible to do.

I heard someone mention briefly during debcofn that the clashing "node"
binary is a daemon and therefore likely to not affect many users if
renamed. Same person (sorry, forgot who it was) also pointed out that
the packaging is also largely unmaintained.

I do not say that you should stop exploring, just that my approach is to
first a) demonstrate through packaging in unstable that nodejs is big
and its main binary is used interactively by many users, and then b)
rehash the discussion with the package maintainer of the "node" package
about possibilities of renaming that one to solve the clash.

I find it a bad approach to educate the World that Debian
favor a ham radio daemon over a hash-bang style interpreter for its
global namespace.

To speed up the process of getting Nodejs into testing and then stable,
I find it more sensible to start approaching the package maintainer of
"node" now, to figure out if in fact it is hard work to change that
instead of this one.

Regards,

 - Jonas

P.S.

Harlan, please do consider subscribe to the mailinglist: it is low
traffic, and eases the continued correspondence not having to remember
to cc you :-)
