I'd say just update the package as a team upload (or become an official
co-maintainer via Uploaders).

Just make sure that the update doesn't break the node-graceful-fs
reverse dependencies, specifically npm & node-gyp. Breaking those will
break most of the Node.js ecosystem in Debian.
