(Apologies if this threads wrong - I wasn't subscribed to the mailing
list so I don't have a local copy. This is also why it took me a bit
to see this.)

We probably don't need it for Debian, but I don't see why that matters - 
this objectively makes things more robust. It also makes it possible to 
run on other Linuxes that ship Python 3 as /usr/bin/python.
