There is indeed an issue here:
upstream node-gyp did not merge
https://github.com/nodejs/node-gyp/commit/5f924ce62c9bca9ab9c2e547bfb87b9a391271ed
into node-gyp branch 3.8, and thus is not compatible with node-tar 4.

Am going to fix that asap.
