I think you (and nginx?) are mistaken: The officially registered meaning 
for file suffix .br is the language breton.
The confusion probably stems from the (officially registered, I guess) 
content-encoding type 'br' which indeed is brotli.
I introduced the brotli-compressed files with extension .br but changed 
that when I realized my mistake.
Until that clash with language code is resolved (if ever) I think it is 
wrong to change back, and I therefore flag this as wontfix.
