This is great. I think our initial goal should therefore be to ship a
good 0.1 package in Ubuntu Raring. The Debian Import Freeze will happen
on Feb. 14, 2013 according to [1], so we have some time.
Also, we need to start thinking about how we will create Debian packages
for the new Julia packages. Even though Julia has its own package
manager, Debian should offer the possibility to download Julia packages
(at least the most useful of them) through the Debian package manager
(the same way that Debian distributes packages for Python, Ruby, R or
Octave despite the fact that all these languages have their own package
manager). To achieve this, we need a system-wide location for Julia
packages (e.g. /usr/share/julia/packages for the arch-independent parts,
and /usr/lib/<arch>/julia/packages for arch-dependent parts if any).
Currently AFAIK the Julia package system only supports the per-user
location in ~/.julia. We need support for both a system-wide location
and a per-user location, so that users can use both system-provided and
user-installed packages at the same time. Of course, from the point of
view of the user, the system-wide location is read-only, and this has to
be kept in mind in the implementation.
