I don't understand why people would see this as a problem. My impression
is that this is just prejudice coming from people who are using OSes
without a decent package manager.

I have explained in issue #1692 the reasons for which I think this move
is a good one. And I did not see any decent argument for not doing so.

I would be very disappointed if this effort was considered in a negative
way by the Julia community. Hopefully some users have expressed their
positive feelings about this.

Also note that these would be separate Debian packages, and therefore
their installation would remain optional.

I agree that this is necessary, since the Julia package manager is not
able to cooperate with APT.

I thinks this boils down to whether ~/.julia is
before /usr/share/julia/site/ in LOAD_PATH. Is this indeed the case?

Yes, but unfortunately this is not possible at the moment, since the
version of ipython in Debian is too old. I will see how this can be
fixed.
