[Pkg-julia-devel] Need help for packaging Julia 0.4

I am fine with keeping packaging requirements in mind and patching things when needed in Julia to take them into account, and it is convenient for people on debian-based distributions to have julia available through standard package management.

But I personally find debian packages confusing to create and perpetually outdated, just due to the structural constraints of having so many levels things need to go through before the average ubuntu user gets their hands on something, even when the debian maintainer is perfectly responsive and involved as Sebastien has been.

So I think we'll need to find someone else for this, dealing with master and the release branch and our buildbots for 5 platforms is already a lot of work even with both Elliot and myself working on it. I'll never be using the Debian package so I won't have much investment in keeping it going.

I have an Ubuntu package that I maintain that is very similar to your Debian package, but honestly I'm not crazy about taking on further packaging duties either.  I think the most difficult part of this would be ensuring that the package meets Debian's standards, as I think Ubuntu PPA's are much less stringent about policy than Debian is.

Hi Sebastien,

Thanks for all your contributions, and hopefully you will have more time in the future. We’ll try to pool efforts together. I am copying Tony and Elliot who have been anchoring much of our builds and distribution, to see if they can help.
