[Pkg-julia-devel] Ubuntu PPA

Hello guys,

I was recently alerted about this
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/julia/+bug/1535573?comments=all>,
which just goes to show how out of the loop I am with regards to the Ubuntu
PPA that I have been maintaining over the years. My involvement with Julia
is at an all-time low at the moment, and unfortunately I do not see that
changing in the near future, so I wanted to open the discussion up as to
what should be done with the PPA. Since the Ubuntu packaging code
<https://github.com/staticfloat/julia-debian> is extremely similar to the
Debian packaging code, keeping the Ubuntu PPA running could be as easy as
changing a single line in this script
<https://github.com/staticfloat/julia-buildbot/blob/master/commands/launchpad.sh#L12>
to point to another git repository. Perhaps there are other differences
that would need to be made, but personally I have to keep on cutting out
maintenance tasks from my life in order to make room for new things.

If noone here is interested in maintaining the PPA (or thinks it is
unnecessary) then I shall cast my net a little wider to other julians, and
if I still get no bites I'm going to deprecate it and tell users to either
install from source, use the generic linux binaries, or use debian package
that gets pulled into Ubuntu once a year. (shudder)

Thanks all,
-E
