Well, I think that's the root of the problem.

I see Worker 1 to Worker 8 in the build log, but I didn't explicitly
told him to use any parallel building at all.

Try building on a virtual machine with 4GB of RAM and only one CPU and
see what happens.

This reminds me of this bug, where the zeroc-ice package went mad
about parallelization and assumed I had an infinity amount of memory
to build:
