Hi!
I can not find more bugs in console-setup. So it seams it is now the
right time to release the package and start colecting bug reports by
other users. The package is completely configurable via Debconf but
the "setupcon" script makes very easy to use it on non-Debian
distributions also.
The Debian package install two scripts in /etc/init.d - keyboard-setup
and console-setup. These scripts are executed after the scripts of
kbd and console-tools and hence we have configuration that is
completely independent from kbd, console-tools and console-data. This
approach is very similar to that of console-cyrillic, the only
difference is that console-cyrillic does not attempt to perform early
keyboard configuration because the Latin part of almost all non-Latin
keyboards is identical to US QWERTY.
It seams to me that such data oriented console configuration is
simpler to console suite oriented. Currently kbd and console-tools
packages contain scripts with same functionalyty when the only
important difference is that one of the packages has to use "setfont"
and the other "consolechars". It would be simpler to move the
configuration of kbd and console-tools entirely in console-data.
The keyboard data in the package was taken from the CVS repository of
XKeyboardConfig. The X rules file is buggy with respect to non-AT
keyboards so a changed rules file is used in console-setup. I have
reported the bugs together with a patch to X.
Do you think that something else should be done before a Debian
package can be uploaded?
