Michael,

Agreed.  That's why bug #390703 is still open.

As outlined in the upstream forward for #390703, the issue is that digikam
does not, as it should, read the .so files in libgphoto2-2. But rather 
digikam reads the .la files in libgphoto2-2-dev!

Until digikam upstream can resolve this issue, the best workaround is for
digikam to depend on libgphoto2-2-dev and the user can access camera's
via libgphoto.
