Since the number of speeds writable was reduced I've been struggling
to write any media without running the buffers down to 0% full.

The main problem is that all data comes from NFS mounted boxes over a
100Mbps LAN. With CDs, 16x works as long as the LAN is quiet (tough
since /usr is also an NFS mount); with DVDs, 4x usually works until
about 80% of the disk is written, then the buffers empty even if the
LAN is quiet.

With DVD Dual Layer media there is an additional problem in that the
most common blanks available are 2.4x! Writing them at 4x seems to
work as long as they are being read by the device attached to the
computer, but the DVD player connected to the TV and home theatre amp
sometimes has trouble with them.

It would be really nice if 8x and 2.4x speeds were available for CD
and DVD media repectively.

For the record:
this is a 1GHz box with 512M RAM,
and the device is an LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H50N (2M buffer),
everything was fine before the number of available write speeds was
reduced.
