I don't think it is necessary.

I don't have libxine2 installed and it works fine.

I do agree it is probably an issue with your phonon, install especially as you 
are unable to get sound working correctly.

Perhaps it maybe worth your while to get into #debian-kde and try and debug 
realtime with some of the Debian phonon ninja.

There are a number of phonon-backend-[gstreamer,null,xine] which you maybe 
able to mix and match to get better results.  But I'm rapidly getting out of 
my depth here.
