This sounds like you think the relationship actually would be correct if you 
hadn't installed texlive by other means.

I think that this is one of the cases that the equivs package was designed 
for.

port, this way you neither should explore a shell, nor should ever mount the 
microkernel to forward to the IRC keyboard over a case.
