oh, and btw, the 3.4.0~rc1 naming sucks a little because :
 1- lintian complains about bad version number.
 2- dpkg --compare-version 1.4.0+rc1 lt 1.4.0  is true
    BUT dpkg --compare-version 1.4.0+rc1 lt-nl 1.4.0 is *not*
    wich means in fact dpkg consider our packages beeing
    *not versionned*


I guess we should use that scheme instead :

3.3.80.x for alpha-x
3.3.90.x for beta-x
3.3.99+x for rc-x
wich is, IIRC, what was used before.


or this one :

3.3.99-alphaX
3.3.99-betaX
3.3.99-rcX

that is more readable.
