  As I said on [1], I preferred to make the change when it would be
  clear that both parties would rename their files. Anyway, it's done,
  but please note my last sentence in that mail: "work out the details
  for a smooth transition."

  As /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu is a conffile, dpkg won't remove
  it on upgrades, and it's the job of the maintainer not to leave it
  around (especially if some other package is to provide it afterwards).
  See Bug#308252 for a sample preinst script that I just wrote dealing
  with a similar issue.

  Still waiting for a word from the GNOME guys, though.
