Interesting observation. I assume it is matter of the kernel
version or of the wear pattern at the USB hardware. 

Did you try a Debain Live CD ?
Maybe it's not the kernel but some Desktop feature which
causes problems by overly busy USB activities.

But whom to ask for help ?
Even if you find a developer who is interested, there will
remain the problem of reproducability.

I am running three BD drives at USB of Debian 8.1.
  ... 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1 (2015-05-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux
No problems to see there. (I wish i could say that about the
system setup, already.) The system is one week old. But i
already made base backups via these drives and daily updates.
About 400 GB went through the wire forth and back (when being
checkread).

But if you find a pattern in kernel versions or Live Desktops
then there might be the opportunity to get your individual
system salvaged.
