I don't think there's a particular wells suited list but debian-users
might help with building debs.

In short you can clone the sources from git.debian.org and run
dpkg-buildpackage in there after making your modifications.

There's also a bpo/wheezy branch which keeps or updated wheezy version.
It's not 1.2 yet though.
