To be honest the chances my having the time in the near future is pretty
slim. I took the route of marking all of gnome-core except
gnome-user-share as manually installed and removed gnome-core and
avahi-daemon and related packages.

I'm working 60+ hour week right now and trying to find time for anything
besides things that I absolutely have to do is hard.

(I didn't absolutely need USB passthrough I guess but I wanted to be
able to create a Windows recovery USB stick and wouldn't have wanted to
be without it which is why I went to the trouble of getting this to work
- I updated my Windows VM for compatibility with work, which is what
this is all about).
