libvirt-bin reports xxx not supported by this qemu binary for any number of things (such as pci bridges and usb ohci and ehci) that are in fact supported.  Moving the /usr/bin/kvm script from qemu-kvm to /usr/local/bin/kvm and updating the domain XML emulator tag to use /usr/local/bin/kvm works around the issue (no errors thrown) with no apparent ill effects.
