It seems the autopkgtest fails on debci:

https://ci.debian.net/data/autopkgtest/testing/amd64/libg/libguestfs/18606297/log.gz

Try removing --mode=root from the mmdebstrap call.

You can also remove the comment above the mmdebstrap call. The first two points
were valid in 2019 but are not true anymore.
