Unfortunately this issue is being raised because, although it's
been that way for some period, the decision to retain this changed
SONAME is actively causing issues for other distributions and their
users.

Admittedly it's not your fault that your customers / downstreams
are building software on a Debian derived system and shipping it to
customers who they know are using non-Debian systems, however you are in
a position to resolve this and prevent other end-users from experiencing
this pain (and linking it to Debian's decisions!)

Additionally, Simon reported this issue over four years ago, with a
great explanation of why Debian-specific SONAMEs are problematic.

I firmly believe that this should be resolved, even if the Trixie
timetable is a bit optimistic; I would settle for getting this fixed
in Sid so that it _eventually_ flows downstream.

Regardless of your (and Release Management's) decision at the end of the
day, thanks for considering the issue.
