Thanks. I'm surprised at the amount of EAGAINs in your strace output. I 
diffed yours and mine, and they're pretty much the same. The only 
difference is that my only successful read on fd=3 is the second one 
from the call to socket(), while yours succeeds right away. Not sure if 
that's indicative of anything though.
In any case, ps still shows no panel running, and I see no panel 
running. And I do see it running if I start it via lx-panel. Sorry for 
not being of more assistance, if you have any ideas, I'm listening.
