Yes, that would be really good. I digged once again into this: As far as 
the desktop background is concerned, the only thing needed (to be 
compliant w/ desktop-base) is setting the wallpaper variable to the 
desktop-base related file (/etc/alternatives/desktop-background).

Agreed.

Good. So the wallpaper variable setting could go into some file there, I 
guess.
