I think this *might* have been fixed in 0.17 with these:

Can anyone confirm that?

If so, could these patches be backported to Debian?

I agree that the message is highly annoying and *unnecessary*, as it 
seems to pop up when xscreensaver is running, working, and locking just 
fine.
