[Pkg-mailman-hackers] Bug#603904: Fresh installation of mailman has wrong permissions, causes archiving to fail

Hi,

I have a question in relation to the discussion
following http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-mailman-hackers/2012-July/004080.html:

   In a fresh mailman install:
          Debian Squeeze 6.0.5
          Mailman 2.1.13

after solving all the check_perms errors:
          # check_perms -f
          # chgrp -h list /var/lib/mailman/*

I find that I can also solve the problem by
      # chown www-data /var/lib/mailman/archives/private

In this way check_perms does not complain (apparently it only checks for
group ownership), both list and www-data can read and write happily in the
directory, and list and www-data can not access any other files from each
other.

However, this solution has not been mentioned before... Is there a
caveat?

   Kind regards,
   Lucas
